Ambitieux, il décide de se rendre à Paris, malgré une situation financière plutôt mauvaise, et est reçu à l’Académie des Beaux-Arts. Son séjour parisien dure quatre ans puis il retourne au pays. Il se consacre alors à la peinture, surtout à la gravure et au genre historique. Il y a aussi quelques élèves. En 1792, après avoir mené à bien une mission qui lui a été confiée par la Société patriotique française, mais qui ne lui a pas attiré que des amis, il décide de quitter La Chaux-de-Fonds et s’installe à Bienne. Il est le troisième de huit enfants nés entre 1849 et 1858, dont quatre seulement sont devenus adultes. Sa mère Marie Chardon était lingère puis épicière. Son père Jacques Mégard était boucher et guillocheur et son grand-père ouvrier fayencier. Son frère Claude Henri Mégard était bijoutier-orfèvre. Joseph a épousé Caroline Sadoux, une institutrice. Ils eurent une fille, Juliette Adèle Mégard, pianiste.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJoseph Mégard avait son atelier chez lui, à la rue de Carouge à\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ePlainpalais\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e(Genève). Il dessinait en général d'après nature : les bords de l'Arve, les bords de l'Aire, les rives du\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003elac, des vues prises au pied du\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eSalève\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eou de\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eChampel. Sa peinture était « attentive, sérieuse, propre, mais, voulant magnifier la nature dans un coloris modéré. (...) Il publie de 1761 à 1779 six volumes appelés « L’Œuvre de Basan », où il regroupe plusieurs centaines d’estampes, reproduisant les œuvres de grand maîtres hollandais, flamands, français, italiens et allemands (ses propres gravures y occupent une place minime). Il réunit également près de cinq mille plaques de cuivre, dont celles de Rembrandt : en 1786, Basan achète 78 cuivres originaux de Rembrandt à la vente aux enchères du collectionneur et graveur français Watelet. Il est aussi l'éditeur fameux de deux importants recueils d'estampes de reproduction. En 1770, le duc de Choiseul, désirant perpétuer le souvenir de sa galerie de tableaux, s'adressa à Basan pour la reproduire par la gravure. Le travail était déjà commencé lorsque la disgrâce royale s'abattit en décembre 1770 sur le ministre qui se retira en grand seigneur sur son magnifique domaine de Chanteloup. Pressé par des besoins d'argent considérables, Choiseul se résolut à vendre ses tableaux. L'entreprise dont il avait confié la direction à Basan servirait ainsi de publicité à la vente aux enchères. Abandonnant le traditionnel format in-folio des recueils du XVIIe siècle et du début du XVIIIe siècle et qu'il conservait pour son Œuvre, Basan adopta ici le format in-4. Il en exposa les raisons dans sa dédicace : « Monseigneur, lorsque vous m'ouvrîtes les trésors de votre cabinet, je pris la liberté de vous proposer d'en faire graver les tableaux dans une forme dont la petitesse n'empêchât pas de reconnoître l'excellence des maîtres qui les ont exécutés ; vous eûtes la bonté d'applaudir à la nouveauté de cette idée, et vous me permîtes de l'exécuter en me confiant les tableaux ; j'ai mis tous mes soins à remplir mes engagemens et votre attente. J'ai composé ce volume d'un format portatif et que l'on peut consulter toutes les fois qu'on voudra rappeler à son imagination l'agrément et les beautés des originaux ». Choffard grava la page de titre dont l'ornementation exalte autant l'ancien ministre de la guerre que l'amateur éclairé. La vente des tableaux de Choiseul se déroula en avril 1772. Pressé par le temps, Basan ne put faire reproduire que 128 tableaux, de maîtres flamands et hollandais essentiellement. Born in 1795, he lived in the first half of the 19th century on the upper Missouri near Bismarck in what is now the US state of North Dakota. He was famous among his people as a brave warrior because he killed a Cheyenne chief in a wrestling match. When he was painted by Catlin and Bodmer, he was the second chief of his tribe - three years later - in 1836 - the first chief. He was friends with the painters Karl Bodmer and George Catlin, who both painted the chief. In 1832, Karl Bodmer painted two pictures of Mato-Tope. It shows the Chief in his best clothes and artistic face paint. The headdress made of eagle feathers is also impressive. With the artistic lance that Mato-Tope holds in his hand, he killed the Arikara members who killed his brother. Below the tip, the scalps of the Arikara adorn the lance. The wooden knife symbolizes a man-to-man fight in which he took a knife from a Cheyenne. Mato-Tope was a frequent guest of the painters, often bringing his wife and a boy named Mato-Berocka (= Male Bear). Mato-Tope sometimes needed a whole morning to get ready for a painting.
