Presented at the Académie on 26 January 1732, the plate was also included in 'Recueil d'estampes d'après les plus beaux tableaux et d'après les plus beaux desseins qui sont en France' (also known as 'Recueil Crozat'); see 1907,1121.14 for comment.
The painting, executed c. 1576/82, left the Crozat collection in 1772, when it was bought by the Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg, where it remains today.
