A half-length portrait of a clergyman, man of letters or professor, depicted in three-quarter view, his gaze directed towards the viewer. The sitter is dressed in a simple black cassock , enhanced by a white collar characteristic of the secular clergy in the 18th century. The face, rendered with delicacy, has a rosy complexion and a calm, thoughtful expression, accentuated by a powdered hairstyle typical of the period.

The dark, neutral background highlights the figure in a composition of great restraint, in keeping with the mid-18th-century French taste for portraits of clergymen and notables. The brushwork is delicate, with soft modeling and particular attention paid to the transitions of light on the face.

Portrait à mi-corps d’un homme d’Église, homme de lettres, ou professeur, représenté de trois-quarts, le regard dirigé vers le spectateur. Le modèle est vêtu d’une soutane noire sobre, rehaussée d’un rabat blanc caractéristique du clergé séculier au XVIIIᵉ siècle. Le visage, traité avec délicatesse, présente une carnation rosée et une expression calme et réfléchie, soulignée par une coiffure poudrée typique de l’époque.

Le fond sombre et neutre met en valeur la figure, dans une composition d’une grande sobriété, conforme au goût français du milieu du XVIIIᵉ siècle pour les portraits d’ecclésiastiques et de notables. La touche est fine, avec un modelé doux et une attention particulière portée aux transitions de lumière sur le visage.
