Exceptional circular table in Macassar ebony and partial gilding by Axel Einar Hjorth for Nordiska Kompaniet: circa 1928.

The table is of Macassar ebony with a stepped edge, supported by three hand carved and gilded palm-shaped legs, with black lacquer inside, resting on an angular triangular Macassar base, with black lacquered square legs. 

Hjorth exhibited pieces from the Louis and Ceasar collections at the 1929 Barcelona International Exhibition.

"Axel Einar Hjorth (1888-1959) was one of the leading Swedish designers of the first half of the 20th century. Hjorth was instrumental in introducing Swedish decorative arts to America, exhibiting his work with that of Carl Hörvik and Carl Malmsten at the Metropolitan Museum in New York in 1927.

Between 1926 and 1938 Hjorth worked as a designer and chief architect for Nordiska Kompaniet"
